Paws Forever: Memorial Fused Glass for Pluto

Back in May, I created a few fused glass doggy paws for my good friend’s stepdaughter’s dog, Aspen. Earlier in February, I made another set of special paws for Marilyn’s dog, also named Aspen. It’s so touching that both of these beautiful dogs shared not only a name but also a special place in their families’ hearts. Below are some pictures of both fused glass paws— the top row shows Alora’s doggy paws, and the second row features Marilyn’s Aspen. Each paw was lovingly made with a touch of ashes, capturing their memory in a lasting and meaningful way. I always feel honored when someone trusts me to create a remembrance piece like this. Whether it’s a paw print, heart, or pendant, it’s a privilege to help keep the memory of a beloved companion alive through glass.

This time the paws were for Marilyn’s dog, Pluto — what a sweet and funny dog he was. I always make the colors in whatever my clients want to use, so each piece truly reflects their pet’s personality. Before creating the final pieces, I always test the colors first to make sure they blend beautifully together and fuse just right. For Marilyn, I made four special pieces: a plant stake, key chain, pendant, and pocket paw. If you look closely at the back of the paws, you’ll notice something unique — you can’t control how the ashes will react with the glass. Sometimes they stay in a perfect heart, and other times they bubble, but I believe it always turns out exactly the way it’s meant to be.

Before I start making the final memorial pieces, I always test the colors first to see how they’ll look once fused. Every shade reacts a little differently in the kiln — sometimes a color deepens, softens, or even surprises me with a beautiful new tone. Here are my test doggy paws, where I experiment with color combinations and layering before creating the finished keepsakes. I love this part of the process because it lets me explore how each color can capture a pet’s personality — playful, calm, bold, or sweet — and make sure every piece turns out just right.

Of course, I also love making fun doggy paws in a variety of colors! Not every paw has to be a memorial piece — sometimes they’re just joyful little reminders of how much we love our furry friends. The photo on the left shows paws made with reactive glass, where copper and sulfur glass react in the kiln to create unique color effects and outlines. The photo on the right features paws with murrine, giving them a playful, one-of-a-kind look that makes each piece stand out. I really enjoy experimenting with these techniques — it’s amazing how a small change in glass can create such different, beautiful results.

Farewell, Pluto.
You were such a sweet and funny dog — full of love, personality, and joy. You always had a way of making people smile with your playful spirit and gentle heart. You’ll be deeply missed, but your memory lives on through the beautiful glass paws made in your honor. Each one carries a little piece of your spirit — a reminder of the unconditional love and happiness you brought to those around you.

Run free, sweet Pluto. 🌈🐾
