As America celebrates her 250th birthday, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than through glass. I’ve always been proud to call this country home, and after serving 22 years in the United States Air Force, that pride has only grown stronger. Every patriotic piece I create is a tribute to the freedoms we sometimes take for granted, the courage of those who have defended them, and the incredible beauty of the American spirit. From the stars and stripes to our majestic bald eagle, this collection is my heartfelt thank you to the nation that has given me so much.
Happy 250th Birthday, America—you are still the greatest country in the world.

As I write this, Colorado is facing one of the most devastating wildfire events in recent memory. The Aspen Acres Fire, burning in Pueblo and Custer Counties, has grown rapidly into the state’s largest active wildfire, fueled by extreme heat, dry conditions, and powerful winds. Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, including the communities of Beulah, Rye, San Isabel, Wetmore, and most recently all of Colorado City. Sadly, hundreds of homes and other structures have already been destroyed, and firefighters continue working around the clock to protect lives, homes, and the beautiful forests we all cherish. Watching this disaster unfold has been heartbreaking, especially knowing so many families have had only moments to gather what they could before leaving everything behind.

I had created a collection of patriotic magnets to hide along the Westcliffe Fourth of July parade route, hoping they would bring smiles to those celebrating America’s 250th birthday. But when the parade was canceled because of the Aspen Acres Fire, it was a sobering reminder that our first responders had far more important work to do. Our firefighters, EMS personnel, sheriff’s deputies, and countless volunteers were focused on protecting lives, homes, and our beautiful community. Rather than let the magnets sit at home, I took them to the Railroad Museum to share with those attending the annual pancake breakfast. I also brought several fused glass hearts and crosses to be given to our firefighters, EMS personnel, and sheriff’s deputies as a small token of appreciation for their courage and selfless service. It wasn’t much, but I simply felt the need to do something. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can mean the most.

Of course, I couldn’t create patriotic magnets without making a few for my own family. The two vintage red truck magnets reminded me of my brothers, so each of them will receive one. For my six sisters, I chose beautiful patriotic butterflies and a heart, each symbolizing the love we share for our country and our family. I always enjoy creating gifts that come from the heart, and I hope these little keepsakes will remind them of America’s 250th birthday and how blessed we are to celebrate it together.

Of course, I couldn’t create patriotic magnets without saving a few for my own family. This special collection is for my daughter, Dan, and me. I had every intention of choosing just one for myself, but that quickly went out the window! I loved them so much that I decided to keep three—one for my office, one for our home in Westcliffe, and one for our home in Falcon. Every time I see them, I’ll be reminded not only of America’s 250th birthday but also of this unforgettable Fourth of July and the resilience of the Colorado communities we love.

Of course, I had to create one patriotic piece just for me. I designed a red, white, and blue fused glass wind chime, added a vintage bell, and hung it from our deck in Westcliffe. I smile every time I see it swaying in the mountain breeze. To me, it’s more than just a wind chime—it’s a reminder of my love for America, the freedoms we enjoy, and this memorable Fourth of July. I have a feeling it will become one of those treasured pieces that brings back wonderful memories every time the wind makes it sing.

I also created a few patriotic fused glass ornaments. I haven’t quite decided what I’m going to do with them yet, but that’s part of the fun! They may become gifts for family and friends, decorations for our Christmas tree, or perhaps they’ll find a special place in our Westcliffe home as a year-round reminder of America’s 250th birthday. One thing is certain—I never seem to get tired of red, white, and blue. Every patriotic piece I create reminds me how blessed I am to live in this incredible country, and I hope these little ornaments will eventually bring that same sense of pride and gratitude to someone else.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, my prayers extend beyond this special anniversary. I pray for healing for the families affected by the Aspen Acres Fire, for the safety of every firefighter and first responder, and for gentle rains to bring relief to our beautiful Colorado forests. I also pray that America continues to be a beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunity for generations to come. No matter the challenges we face, I believe that faith, kindness, and the strength of our communities will carry us forward.
God bless Colorado, and God bless America.
