As you know, I love just about anything made from glass, and I’m always fascinated by the different ways artists work with it. One technique that really caught my attention is flintknapping, an ancient art that dates back thousands of years. Knapping is the process of carefully chipping away small pieces of stone, such as flint or obsidian, to create sharp edges and specific shapes. Early humans used this technique to make knives, arrowheads, spear points, and other essential tools. Today, talented artists like Russell use these same traditional techniques with modern materials, including glass! By carefully striking or applying pressure to the glass, they remove tiny flakes, gradually shaping it into beautiful blades with incredibly sharp edges. The knife pictured here is the very first one I purchased from Russell, and I was immediately impressed by the craftsmanship. From the delicate, hand-knapped glass blade to the beautifully detailed handle, it’s a wonderful example of how an ancient skill can become a modern work of art. And, of course, once I discovered someone creating knives out of glass, I had to have some of his knifes for me, my husband, my son, and my brothers!

One of the things I find fascinating about Russell’s work is his ability to create custom glass knives for his customers. These two beautiful patriotic knives were specially commissioned by his customers, and they’re perfect examples of his creativity and craftsmanship! Both feature striking red, white, and blue glass blades, carefully shaped using traditional knapping techniques. One has a gorgeous antler handle commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, while the other features a natural, rustic-looking handle. I especially love how the layers of colored glass become part of the blade’s design as Russell carefully chips away the glass. With 2026 marking our nation’s 250th birthday, these knives are a wonderful way to celebrate American history while showcasing an ancient art form. What incredible keepsakes!

Just look at some of Russell’s other amazing fused glass knives! Each one is truly a unique work of art, and I love how no two are alike. The colors are absolutely stunning, from fiery reds and oranges to brilliant turquoise blues, soft whites, and even beautiful combinations of multiple colors. What really fascinates me is how the knapping process exposes the different layers of fused glass, creating intricate patterns and textures along the blades. Some have dramatic dark edges, while others reveal unexpected colors as the glass is chipped away. And the handles are just as impressive! Russell uses a variety of natural-looking materials, including beautifully grained wood and rustic antlers, giving each knife its own personality. I especially love how he combines the ancient art of knapping with modern fused glass to create something completely different. These aren’t just knives—they’re incredible examples of craftsmanship, creativity, and glass artistry. I could spend hours looking at all the different designs, and I’m always excited to see what Russell creates next!

Now this knife is something really special! Russell created this one just for me, and I absolutely love it! The glass is made with petrified wood glass on both sides and a beautiful robin egg blue glass sandwiched in the middle. Just look at the photos of the original fused glass before Russell worked his magic! The swirling shades of brown, bronze, charcoal, and blue create incredible movement and depth, almost like looking into a polished gemstone or a beautiful piece of natural stone. But the real magic happens when Russell starts knapping! As he carefully removes layers of glass, the hidden colors and patterns are revealed, creating an extraordinary three-dimensional appearance in the blade. The depth is absolutely amazing, and every little chip exposes another beautiful detail. Russell finished it with a wonderfully textured natural-looking handle, making the entire knife a work of art. I honestly can’t stop looking at this one! It’s a perfect example of how two different glassworking techniques can come together to create something truly extraordinary. This is definitely one of my treasured pieces!

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of Russell’s incredible glass knives as much as I’ve enjoyed sharing them! As a fused glass artist, I’m constantly amazed by the different ways glass can be transformed, and Russell’s work takes that creativity to an entirely different level. What makes this even more special is that I actually create fused glass blanks for Russell to knap into knives and sell to his customers. I love being part of the creative process and seeing how he transforms my glass into these extraordinary works of art! Of course, there’s just one little problem—I love the finished knives so much that I want to keep them all! Each one is unique, and it’s always exciting to see what colors and patterns emerge through his knapping. And speaking of exciting, my next challenge is creating a Denver Broncos-inspired glass blank in orange, blue, and white! I can’t wait to see how those colors come together and what Russell creates with it. That’s what I love about glass art—there’s always another challenge, another creative adventure, and another reason to fire up the kiln!
