Whimsical Wonders in Fused Glass

I always enjoy welcoming Julie and Caren back to my fused glass studio. Before each class, we take a few minutes to complete the required liability forms, then it’s time for one of my favorite traditions—a free fused glass gift! This time, I had a collection of patriotic pieces to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, including magnets, pendants, pocket hearts, stirrers, and other small keepsakes. Watching them both decide which treasure to take home is always fun. With the paperwork behind us and patriotic gifts in hand, we were ready for a day of laughter, creativity, and fused glass.

Julie and Caren have explored these rooms during previous classes, we skipped the tour this time and headed straight to creating. I still wanted to share a glimpse of my Finished Room because it’s one of my favorite spaces in the studio. This is where I display many of my completed fused glass pieces before they find their forever homes. Filled with colorful dishes, jewelry, wall art, and decorative pieces, it’s also where I photograph much of my work. Every shelf and table holds a little inspiration and reminds me just how many possibilities there are with fused glass.

Finished Room: Although Julie and Caren have explored these rooms during previous classes, we skipped the tour this time and headed straight to creating.

Finishing & Inspiration Room: This is my Finishing & Inspiration Room, where projects receive their final touches and new ideas often begin. It’s filled with specialty supplies, displays, and some of my favorite creations. I love spending time here because one finished piece almost always inspires the next project. Whether I’m adding decals, assembling jewelry, or simply admiring completed artwork, this room is where creativity continues long after the kiln has cooled.

Gallery Area: The Gallery Area is where many of my finished fused glass creations are displayed while waiting to find their forever homes. I love seeing everything together—from functional dishes and jewelry to wall art and seasonal decorations—because it reminds me of how versatile, fused glass can be. Even though Julie and Caren know this room well, I thought I’d share it with you. It’s one of my favorite spaces in the studio and a wonderful reminder that every finished piece began as just a few simple pieces of glass.

While we skipped the studio tour, I had spent time preparing the workspace specifically for Julie and Caren. Their workstations were stocked with everything they would need—glass cutters, running pliers, grozing pliers, cutting mats, cleaning supplies, and plenty of room to spread out and create. I also organized a wide selection of specialty paints so they could browse the colors and choose the ones that best fit their designs. I love seeing students explore all the possibilities before making that first brushstroke or glass cut. Once the paints were selected and the ideas started flowing, the studio quickly filled with conversation, creativity, and the excitement that comes with bringing a new fused glass project to life.

Julie decided to create an adorable turtle plant stake, and I absolutely love how it turned out! Since she has taken several classes with me, she was ready to build on her skills by using both the ring saw and the grinder to shape her design. She also hand-painted many of the tiny details, including the turtle’s toes, smiling mouth, shell dots, and the three charming ladybugs resting on its back. It’s those little touches that really bring a piece to life and give it personality. Watching Julie’s confidence and artistic abilities grow with each class is incredibly rewarding, and this whimsical turtle is a perfect example of how far she’s come as a fused glass artist.

Caren never ceases to amaze me with her creativity! She designed this whimsical bird completely from her own imagination, giving it a fun personality and so many delightful details. To make it even more unique, she added copper wire to create the bird’s whimsical crest, and we built a small pocket into the bottom so she can insert decorative wire legs after firing. She hand-painted the beautiful floral designs, swirls, beak, and facial details, then finished it off with tiny painted dots that add just the right amount of charm. Every time Caren comes to class, she challenges herself with something new, and this colorful little bird is no exception. It has so much personality, and I think she did an absolutely magnificent job! I can’t wait to see it finished, after she curls the copper and adds the legs and feet.

One of the greatest blessings of teaching fused glass is the friendships that develop along the way. Julie and Caren have become more than students—they’re part of my fused glass family. Every class is filled with laughter, creativity, and plenty of encouragement as we share ideas and celebrate each other’s successes. Thank you both for another wonderful day in the studio. I already can’t wait for our next creative adventure!
